Nearing Homebush Bay is a bay on the Southbank of the Parramatta river in the West of Sydney lies it’s small artificial and, in some parts, natural shoreline. It is a place of rugged shoreline and parkland. As one enters the grassy parkland of the residential developed area, a first glimpse of the plywood home evokes a sense of sanctuary and comfort.
This modern-day cabin draws inspiration from minimalist sloped architecture. The brief was to “provide design solutions to resolve specific humanitarian issues,” in the elimination of stigmatised, dull towers of beige—but instead what is possibly more important; a collaboration with governments and charities to create housing that is socially supported, community-oriented and self-sustaining.

The first principle of sustainability is to reserve the earth’s resources for future generations, to build less; building well and only what is needed. Measuring at just 60m², may be small, but every corner is carefully designed to its highest potential, ensuring the open plan living/kitchen/dining area a spaciousness that is impressive for its volume.
The transition from outdoors to blonde recycled plywood upon entering the home indicates you have stepped into a gentle place of calm. The palette of the interior bares many similarities to the external landscape. This carries the eye outward and gives the illusion that the space extends into the surrounding nature, not confined to the structure of the building.
The minimalist principles displayed throughout this design encourage a lifestyle that is simplistic and intentional. Everything serves a purpose as enhancement to a holistic environment of wellness.
